Residual stresses, weld-induced distortions and secondary stresses were measured. Block program loading was applied, with a stress spectrum resembling wave loading of offshore structures. Fatigue cracking was detected at transverse stiffeners and longitudinal web/flange fillet welds. For transverse stiffeners, 80 per cent of the through thickness fatigue life was spent in growing the crack up to a length of 3 mm.
